Planning

Discovery Rise is a series of villages. Each village is connected by carefully designed cool walkable streets and lanes lined with trees and verandahs, shady parks and gardens, sheltered public spaces and great places to meet.

When fully developed, it is anticipated that around 8,000 people will live at Discovery Rise.

1. Discovery Central
Discovery Central is a village centre linked by bus to Townsville’s CBD and built around the new public square The Ideas Market. Discovery Central is a vibrant place of exchange where ‘Town and Gown’ meet, offering commercial and neighborhood retail services, residential accommodation, teaching and research facilities.

2. University Central
University Central is a new academic core, a place for University services, student and staff housing, conference facilities, the Eddie Koiki Mabo Library and a new school of education and humanities.

3. Discovery Rise Village
Discovery Rise Village comprises many different types of medium density homes, some detached houses, and community and recreation facilities. The Village provides the unique opportunity to live near the University while being part of a truly residential community.

4. Discovery School & Community Precinct
Discovery School & Community Precinct is a mixed density community that includes primary and secondary schools, child care, community meeting rooms and many options for family and retiree living.

5. Discovery Enterprise Park
Discovery Enterprise Park is a research commercialisation precinct with easy access to Discovery Central, the Hospital and transport links.

Design Guidelines

The James Cook University Townsville site is a unique setting; the land framed by rugged hills and dominated by the strong presence of Mt Stuart.

In this unique setting, Discovery Rise is to be a university - based development that is extraordinary in its conception.Through good design there will be a completed transformation of this dispersed campus into a thriving community of living and learning. The places of James Cook University; the buildings, the landscapes, will demonstrate a strong, unique environmentally responsible 'Townsville tropicality'.

The Discovery Rise Design Guidelines is an advisory document under the Townsville City Council City Plan, and should be read in conjunction with the provisions of the planning scheme.
